Due to an influx of exciting projects, we are looking to expand our banks of dependable freelance graphic designers and developers. Currently work can only be offered part-time and on a project by project basis. As a result, the positions would mostly suit current students* or recent graduates looking to get into the industry.

Pay for each position will depend entirely on experience and availability. For both positions you may be required to work or attend meetings in our small studio based in Southsea. Whilst we can offer the use of both a PC and Mac laptop, both models are not exactly top-of-the-range, so any suitors may prefer to use their own equipment.

Make sure you include examples of your work. The quality of your portfolio will be the deciding factor as to whether you will be considered for any position.

Due to the freelance nature of both positions, we don’t have a set amount of jobs available. At this stage we are keen on extending our talent pool and will be offering work to those in the pool as and when we can. Therefore if you are interested in either position, contact us using the form below, making sure you provide either a link to your online portfolio (if you don’t have one, you need to get on Behance quick-smart) or pdf portfolio. If you’d like to send us something via snail mail, let us know and we’ll send you our address.

For more information on both the roles please read the following job descriptions:

Graphic Design Vacancies – Hourly rate DOE

To expand our design resources we are looking for versatile graphic designers for a range of projects, however a vast majority of these projects will fall under two major disciplines; branding and website design. Therefore successful applicants must be able to show skills in both the creation of logos and brand identities and the layout and design of modern and attractive websites. Whilst experience of print design would be useful, it is secondary to the skills listed above. As much as we love poster designs at Flint & Tinder, the sad truth is we get very little interest in such work from our clients.

Ideal candidates will also have:

  • Experience or knowledge of HTML and CSS coding
  • Experience of all major CS applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • An impressive portfolio of work

Whilst it is not imperative that your portfolio consists of client work and student projects, being able to show examples of where you have worked to a tight client brief will be beneficial. That said, as much as we value experience and qualifications, good, clean and professional looking work will impress us more. At Flint & Tinder, we like ideas. The bigger they are the better.

WordPress Developer Vacancies – Hourly rate DOE

Aside from designers, we are also looking to expand our network of PHP developers. As we build most of our sites using the WordPress framework, experience in this field will be vital. We understand that as a developer you might not have an online portfolio as such, so if you can send through links to sites you have worked on and what your role in the project was that would be great.

Applicants must also have:

  • A love for WordPress
  • Experience of using and implementing jQuery (or other JS libraries)
  • Some knowledge of SQL may be beneficial
  • A passion about the visual aesthetics of the site as much as the code
  • A finger on the pulse of current web trends
  • Experience of using e-commerce in WordPress may be useful
  • A knowledge and interest in SEO practices and implementation

Again, we won’t penalise candidates for a portfolio consisting of mostly students projects, but having examples of work where you have worked to a client brief will be useful.

Ideal Candidates

Aside from the skills listed above, ideal candidates for both positions will have to have or display the following characteristics:

  • The ability to interpret and deliver client briefs to a high professional standard
  • A strong eye for detail
  • A passion about design and visual culture
  • A good sense of humour
  • An inquisitive attitude
  • A desire to learn and improve
  • Good taste in music
  • A sense of pride in your personal hygiene

About Flint & Tinder

We are a little team of two currently based in a small office in Southsea. We pride ourselves in creating high quality web and design work for a wide variety of clients. Whilst we might not be able to offer the highest of rates at the moment, if the start of 2013 is anything to go by, this might all change in the near future. It’s an exciting time for us and we fully intend to build on our current successes even further. Our ultimate aim is to not only become a viable alternative to the large expensive London studios, but to also be a great place to work, consisting of a close knit team of like-minded funny and intelligent individuals.

How to apply

To apply for either of the positions, please fill out the form below, making sure you include a link to your online portfolio, links to websites you have built or a hosted version of your portfolio. If you need to email your pdf, contact us first. Don’t worry to much about a “professional” covering letter, in truth such generic responses will probably be ignored. Just a simple personal note about who you are and what you do will suffice.

If you could also provide an idea of what kind of hourly rate you would like to receive that would be great. If you don’t get out of bed for less than 10k, it’s probably best you look elsewhere. Similarly if your experience vastly outweighs that of a student or graduate, then by all means still apply, but don’t pin your hopes on your application.

*as Flint & Tinder are not set up for PAYE, any students or graduates would be responsible for submitting their own tax return to the HMRC.
